Open Call: Non-Fiction Narrative Audio Works

The Adam Mickiewicz Institute is pleased to announce an open call for non-fiction narrative audio works created by producers from the Central and Eastern European region. The competition is being held in cooperation with Radio Atlas as part of the activities accompanying the institute’s Digital Cultures conference to be held in September 2018.
The human voice was a vehicle for passing down history long before writing systems and manuscripts took over. For centuries, stories and tales passed along by word of mouth would sustain local mythologies as well able a motor for social change. Today, at a time when we are witnesses of global dynamic development, what kind of stories do we tell using sound? What role does a narrative soundscape play in storytelling? How can we tell stories in such a way that they are as immersive as possible for the listener?
The aim of the competition is to promote the most engaging audio producers from the region and to raise awareness of narrative audio forms for creators from the following countries: Armenia, Belarus, Bosnia and Hercegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Estonia, Georgia, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland, Russia, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Ukraine and Hungary.
The competition is open to participants above 18 years of age. Works should be no longer than 10 minutes, submitted in WAV or MP3 format with a transcript of the original work, as well as a corresponding transcript in English.
Works, as well as an accompanying author bio, can be sent until 10th August 2018 to the address: [email protected]. The best works will be chosen by a jury consisting of:
- John Beauchamp – Head of Audio, Culture.pl, and broadcaster
- Cathy FitzGerald – radio producer and educator
- Eleanor McDowall – creator of the Radio Atlas website and producer
- Olga Mickiewicz – producer and member of the EBU Radio Features Group, Polish Radio Reportage and Documentary Studio
- Anna Szylar – digital culture expert at the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, head of the Digital Cultures curatorial team
Authors of the top three audio works will receive invitations to attend the Adam Mickiewicz Institute’s Digital Cultures conference in Warsaw on 24th-25th September 2018, which will focus on audio as one of its main themes. The best audio work will be featured on the Radio Atlas website.
