Choreographic Territories. Showcase of Polish dance and choreography supported by EEPAP

CHOREOGRAPHIC TERRITORIES – EASTERN PARTNERSHIP is a programme aiming at presenting contemporary dance and choreographies made by best Polish artists, educators and theorists of dance affiliated with Polish Dance Platform 2014, full of dance presentations, workshops, meetings and debates in four countries participating in Eastern Partnership: Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia and Azerbaijan.

The project is realised in cooperation with experienced local cultural operatives and is a continuation of collaboration initiated during PDP 2014 in Lublin. Its aim is to build a platform of dialogue and exchange of experience between dance scenes in Poland and between selected countries of EP. The mission of the programme is to “recover” contemporary dance in Eastern Europe, bringing it into the general historical discourse of contemporary dance and into the current circulation of contemporary art. We believe that building a common dance scene across borders and boundaries should not only consist in following well-established international tendencies, but also empower the local histories and support countries struggling with political and economical problems in the development of dance.

Presentations

The presentations planned as a part of “Choreographic territories” cover a large proportion of Polish Dance Platform 2014 programme. They are the most interesting Polish productions of contemporary dance in recent years, selected by experienced curators and members of jury. In 2016, they will be shown to international audiences, who will be able to get better acquainted with a broad spectrum of genres, aesthetics and generations in Polish dance.

Workshops

The artists participating in “Choreographic territories” are also experienced instructors of dance techniques and movement composition. The workshops they will conduct, addressed to local dancers, choreographers and dance teachers, round up the artistic offer of the project. It is the most efficient way of directly transferring knowledge, experience and techniques developed by Polish contemporary dance.

Meetings with artists, symposiums, discussions

Meetings between the audience and artists, discussions between artists, the juxtaposition of artistic achievements and acquired knowledge, placed in a political and historical context, are an opportunity to look at the dance pieces in a more thorough and insightful way. During a series of discussions and symposiums dedicated to a specific local context of contemporary dance, along with engaging dance researchers, journalists and theoreticians, we will search for the answers to questions regarding the ways of building its own cultural identity through dance, about attitudes towards tradition of national and folk dance, about common heritage and different paths of development for contemporary dance scenes in East-Central Europe. The project will also include presentations of the rich experience of Polish institutions and programmes supporting dance, such as the Institute of Music and Dance, The Centre for Culture in Lublin, Art Stations Foundation or East European Performing Art Platform. They will be dedicated to the processes of creating new types of organisation and systems of support for artists and dance events organisers.
