Time: 13th -16th of May

RedSapata, Tabakfabrik Linz

THE AS IS A SYSTEM for cross-correlating movement principles, bringing pertinent information about training the body and movement practice into an accessible format, a user’s manual for dancers, athletes and physiotherapists. This consolidation process has helped to clear up misunderstandings and question traditions that are outdated, sponsoring the protection and enhancing the skills of today’s dancers and athletes, and the re-education of movement teachers, choreographers and project leaders the world over.

Alignment overview – co-taught by Baris and Frey

The understanding and application of articular alignment is fundamental to all subsequent activity. Rather than straight lines conceived of in a rigid, vertical relationship with gravity, the study of human structural anatomy indicates that alignment is a balance of forces, a tensional integrity or tensegrity. Although this balance retains a relationship to gravity, it has a remarkable degree of independence. The most pertinent and obvious criteria for establishing tensegrity is to match the joint surfaces as much as possible. This mean in turn that angles between bones will be moderate, and muscle systems on all sides of joints are reasonably solicited. For this subject, Frey and Baris will take turns in a bottom to top review of the most salient aspects of alignment.

LEVEL WITH ME / Frey

- an adventurous exploration of physiologically justified postural/environmental relationships.

As the AS research community deepens the detail and sophistication of its map of the human body-plan and its resources, we have begun to develop terminology for describing the various anatomical relationships that we can have to external support, the ACTIVITY SPHERES. The activity spheres permit us to perceive the change of relationship with more precision, or understand when we are in grey areas or transitions. Clarifying what qualifies a change of relationship allows us to outline the possibilities of this relationship, and furnishes us with a common lecture for the accelerated communication of creative, choreographic ideas or technical analysis. In this intensive I will invite you to participate in and contribute to the research process, as well as propose counsel for acquiring the skills to overcome a range of level-change challenges.

Caught in motion – Applied Physics / Baris

In this part of the workshop we will discuss momentum and kinetic energy, and explore their application through inertial dynamics, gravitational, centrifugal and centripedal forces. I will develop dancing material to illustrate efficient and inventive uses of physics, with the intention to augment the student’s awareness of how coordination choices can assist, interelate and collaborate to harness potential energy and turn it to our advantage while moving. Dancing in agreement with the forces can give us joy, lightness and more freedom.
