Short biography: 

Her current place of work is “Observator cultural” magazine in Bucharest.

A graduate from the University of Bucharest, Department of Letters (BA in Romanian and Latin Studies, 2002), she pursued her studies at the National University of Theatre and Film (UNATC), Bucharest, Department of Theatre (MFA in Playwriting, 2006), and is now a PhD student in Theatre Studies at the Arts University, Tîrgu Mureş/ Márosvásárhely, where she coordinates the translation workshop for MA students in Playwriting.

Cultural journalist for the national newspaper “Ziua” (2002-2008), editor of the performing arts section at the national cultural weekly issue “Observator cultural” (since 2005, as well as employed by the National Theatre in Bucharest in 2008-2010.

Writes regularly for different Romanian publications (“Scena.ro” monthly theatre magazine, “Long April – Texte despre artă”, “Criticatac” etc.).

Jury member at several theatre festivals and journalism competitions. Independent expert for the National Center for Dance in Bucharest and the National Cultural Fund in Romania.

In 2009, Iulia Popovici won a prize for theatre criticism, awarded by the “Timpul” Foundation in Iași.

Editor of several anthologies of new Romanian theatre texts (in Hungarian and Polish) and Polish contemporary drama (translated into Romanian) and editor of a series of new Romanian plays at the “Cartea Românească” Publishing House in Bucharest. Has edited the first DVD-presentation of the contemporary Romanian theatre (Romanian Cultural Institute Warsaw/Bucharest, 2011).

Has curated several playwriting workshops.
Authored a book on the influential Romanian theatre group dramAcum and the beginnings of the new Romanian drama wave in the years 2000.

Will co-curate the first Platform of Romanian Independent Performing Arts which will take place in November 2011, as a part of the Temps d’Image Festival in Cluj.

Member of the International Association of Theatre Critics (Romanian section). Jury member at the Alternative Theatre Festival (DASZSZ), Budapest (2010).

Has given lectures on contemporary Romanian theatre in Warsaw, Wroclaw, Krakow, Budapest, Brussels, New York, Paris, and has taken part in numerous international conferences.

Has written for magazines and anthologies in France, USA, Austria, Poland, Hungary. Author of the section dedicated to “Romania” in “Le Monde du Théâtre”, issued by the International Theatre Institute (ITI) and Peter Land Publishing House, the 2011 (French) edition.

Took part in “The Knot” international project for art in public spaces (2010) in Warsaw and Bucharest.
