Košice

For the last centuries, the whole region of East Slovakia, nowadays located at the edge of Schengen area, has been under the influence of many different kingdoms, countries and cultural groups. This multicultural spirit can still be felt in the city, also because of the huge Hungarian and Roma minority groups.

During the time of communism, Košice became a centre for steel industry, and the population tripled within the next 30 years. The size of the city expanded immensely. During the last few years Košice has been going through a transformation process of turning a post-industrial city into a creative one, aiming for it to become an important cultural hub between the East and West in both social, political and artistic terms.

K.A.I.R., Košice Artist in Residence, which is part of Košice2013 – European Capital of Culture, will host several international artists in Košice in 2013 and provide them with funding, and facilitate the build up local networks and introductions to the local (cultural) scenes. This act aims to inspire an artist to create an artwork or project that reflects his or her experience of a three month stay in Košice.

Artist in Residence

In the framework of the European Capital of Culture, the NGO Košice 2013 is running an international Artist-in-Residence program for emerging artists from all over the world within all artistic disciplines and expressions.

Three main goals are pursued in this residency program:

  1. To support the creative energy of every invited artist and provide the opportunity to work in a new environment and help find (new) artistic ways of expression.
  2. To stimulate the art scenes in both Košice, in the region around, and in the whole of Slovakia. Offer support with the dialogue and confrontation of the residency artists with local artists and the wide public.
  3. To create and strengthen a beneficial environment for the development of innovative and international contemporary art projects with both international and local participants.

According to these goals, organizations introduce every artist to the social environment of the city and the region and help them to build up networks and collaborations with local artists. There will be organized public events like exhibitions, artist talks, projections, workshops, and open studios to give all the artists a chance to introduce and present themselves to a wide public.
