Harutyun Alpetyan - Independent art curator

Sylwia Śmigiel
Short biography:

After working as a technical consultant at Bosch Automotive for years, Harutyun Alpetyan switched his professional interest over to arts. He had for years, even during his career as an engineer, created video documentary clips and finally saw an opportunity to shift his focus onto his artistic work. He particularly tried to understand how his work would be perceived within a local art environment, a context that he had not explored and was quite unfamiliar with. In doing this he understood the necessity of doing further research and studying the local arts.

In the summer of 2009 Harutyun Alpetyan took part in the Curatorial Summer School organized by AICA Armenia. Subsequently, in September, he enrolled in a year-long course called “The Job of Exhibition and Cultural Criticism” conducted by AICA Armenia. At the same time he founded, with his colleague Nvard Yerkanian, an art space called AJZspace where they began to work on different projects, most of them related to curatorial practices. In two years they had organized more than 20 exhibitions, shows, presentations and artist talks at the AJZspace. At least six of these events were done in collaboration with foreign artists.

Currently working in Armenia.
