The Giles Foreman Centre for Acting, London, in association with the Schott Acting Studio, Berlin, is delighted to show Berlin the renowned work of Yat Malmgren whose technique, known as ”Movement Psychology” has made the drama centre in London into one of the major actor training institutions in the world.

Yat Malmgren is regarded as one of the great solo artists in European modern dance who later became a legend in the British actor training, having been the creator of the Laban-Malmgren System of Character Analysis.

The technique is based on the psychological theories of Carl Jung (Sensing, Thinking, Intuiting and Feeling) and the work of Rudolph Laban.

Rudolph Laban, architect of European Contemporary Dance, codified a system of analysing and classifying movement in all its aspects, not only physical, but also in its expressive manifestations and psychological impulses. Malmgren expanded on these ideas to create a psychological typology which brings together Laban and Stanislavsky. This fusion of internal motivation and expressive technique offers the actor a holistic training and the basis for creating character.

Thesis: The theory of Yat Malmgren suggests that we all have Jung’s archetypes within us, some more developed and more active than others. The specific combination of these energies makes up who we are.

Through a set of rhythms, it essentially sensitises the actor to these archetypes or subconscious ”psychological energies” within himself/herself and how they express themselves physically. Eventually it demonstrates how to realign them in different combinations - thus allowing the actor to transform into another human being in a psychologically ‘real’ way. Personality can be seen as a rhythm, or to put it another way, rhythms can induce a different inner state and consequently, a different outer expression or set of movements. The technique therefore provides knowledge of how to reveal a character’s impulse through the body in a psychologically specific way.

The participants in the event are actors, directors, and coaches.

Creators:

  • Christopher Fettes - (co- founder of the Drama Centre alongside Yat and John Blatchley and the man responsible for training some of the great figures of world cinema and theatre today – Anthony Hopkins, Colin Firth, Paul Bettany, Michael Fassbender, Helen McRory, Tara Fitzgerald, Lambert Wilson, Simon Callow, Tom Hardy, Santiago Cabrera, Russell Brand – to name but a few)  the principal lecturer of the workshop.
  • Giles Foreman - trained actor of the Drama Centre, London. He is now one of the leading acting specialists in the UK and founder of Caravanserai Productions and Acting Studios based in London’s Ladbroke Grove.
  • Liana Nyquist - As a Movement Specialist, she coaches actors in both TV and film - most recently, Sennentuntchi (Kontra Production), Zurich (2008-09), Pedaleur de Charme (Maigimax Production) and Clash of the Titans (2009) with Liam Neeson. Liana is a lecturer at CSM, College of Arts and Design, University of Arts, lecturing at the MA and BA courses. She is the Head of Movement at the Drama Centre.
