23rd International Dance Theatres Festival, Lublin, Poland, 12-17 Nov 2019

BMF

23rd edition of International Dance Theatres Festival is a new beginning of our three years program designed for the 2019-2021 period during which we will showcase three highly distinct national dance scenes: Benelux (Holland, Belgian, Luxemburg), German and this year is devoted to Great Britain. Main idea that will be a common thread for our Festival during that time will be one of highlighting idiosyncrasies, antagonisms and attempts at generating dialogue between dance strategies of the contemporary art world. By putting emphasis on these topics we will be developing and expanding the formula for the Festival in order to bring out qualities such as multiplicity, oppositions and diversity expressed equally in scale, style and geography of the region. We will constantly travel between two shores: from performances rooted deeply in tradition of classical dance to the very opposite side of sheer contemporaneity; from presenting emerging artists to showcasing icons on which these upstarts choreographers have grown up on; from showcasing intimate solo performances to large scale ensemble spectacles; from looking at dance created by current artists from Northern Europe to those coming from the eastern corner of the Continent.

This year’s special guest presented as part of the our “large scale” segment will be Company Wayne McGregor with its newest performance called “Autobiography”. It will be our second dance icon, after Hofesh Schechter Company which we have shown in April, coming from Great Britain. It’s another chance for both our local and national audience to gather here in Lublin and meet with the world renowned dance artists at the Opera Hall of the Centre for Meeting of Cultures. Initiated a couple of years ago by an evening with Nederlands Dans Theater 2 and continued with subsequent  presentations of artists such as: Batsheva Dance Company, Ailey 2 or Alonso King Lines, it will be developed further with already planned performances by ROSAS, a dance company of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker (2020) and later on with Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch (2021).

Other artistic guests coming from Great Britain for the current edition of the Festival are makers of the more intimate choreographies: Lucy Suggate, Amy Bell, as well as Jonathan Burrows in collaboration with Matteo Fargion and Hugo Glendinning, who created a unique video project entitled “52 Portraits”, which showcases richness of British dance scene.

British echo will be reverberating in the performances of two Polish artists, who’s education has been influenced by one of the most well known British dance schools. We’re talking about Ramona Nagabczyńska and Paweł Sakowicz, who are graduates of the London Contemporary Dance School. Additionally, Paweł has been choosen as one of this year’s Aerowaves priority artists. It’s a European dance network of which Lublin Dance Theatre is a proud member of. Other artists presented as part of the Aerowaves showcase are Tabea Martin from Switzerland and Leon and the Wolf with Christos Papadopoulos from Greece.

Rounding up the list of other European artists are Elisabetta Consonni from Italy, another graduate from The Place in London and our guest from Belarus, Iryna Shirokaya.

Polish part of our program will be further represented by “If/Then” a premiere by Lublin Dance Theatre created under the choreographic guidance from Joseph W. Alter and the newest production of Kraków Dance Theatre, made in collaboration with Turkish choreographer Ayrin Ersoz, as part of the “Choreographic commissions 2019” program of Institute of Music and Dance.

Since a couple of years ago we have started to include in our program Polish artists of the younger generation. We invite to Lublin those who are starting their individual career and have been awarded during dance and choreographic competitions, both in Poland and abroad. For this year we invited: Agnieszka Jachym, Sebastian Wiertelak, Magdalena Widłak, Katarzyna Myrda, Paulina Jaksim (in a choreography by Anny Nowak).

Project Yanka Rudzka: „Poliphonies” is an interesting production created by an international cast of artists coming from Poland, Brasil, Georgia and Armenia, which raises an important question about the role of inspiration and relation of traditional culture towards contemporary art.

Similar approach can be found in other project entitled “Choreographic territories – new paths for the Avant-garde”, recalling the memory of amazing female artists: Pola Nireńska, Bronisława Niżyńska, Marie Rambert, Yanka Rudzka. Project is realized as part of the “Niepodległa” programme and includes: “Second Nature”, an installation designed by Karolina Grzywnowicz in relation to the performance dedicated to Pola Nireńska, as well as a lecture about Marie Rambert by Mark Baldwin, who’s for many years been a director of London based ballet company called Rambert. Other points associated with the programme are meeting with Weronika Kostyrko, an author of a book called “Tancerka i zagłada. Historia Poli Nireńskiej” and “Cały świat jest naszą sceną”, a photo exhibition by Bolesław Lutosławski.

Amongst many different Festival events there will also be place for: Q & A with the artists, dance workshops and this year’s special “TECHNO FOLK” – workshops associated with “Project Yanka Rudzka: Poliphonies”, dance critique workshop and masterclass run by dancers from Company Wayne McGregor.

It is with pleasure and pride that we invite you to join us for the 23nd International Dance Theatres Festival in Lublin.
